Grief Counselling

There is nothing as painful as losing a loved one. I empathise. We all experience loss during our lives, so I know and value the importance of sharing your grief with someone who is right there with you, metaphorically holding your hand. You are more than welcome to come to my practice, in my home, for a chat, free of charge and see how you feel about it all.

SALLY JARVIS Dipl. BACP

Grief and bereavement is the time we spend adjusting to loss.

There are many causes for grief, the most common being when we lose a loved one. There is no standard time limit or right or wrong way to feel. The impact of losing someone close to you is personal . As with all emotional matters, everyone’s experiences will be different.

The word Bereavement comes from the ancient German for ‘seize by violence’.

Sometimes when someone dies it can feel just like that – like that person has literally been snatched violently from you. These feelings can be there whether you’ve known for some time the person was dying or whether it was quite sudden.

Talking about loss often allows a person the space and time ...

to adjust to their new life with all it’s changes – good and bad. As with everything keeping things bottled up or denying the sadness and confusion just prolongs the pain. Any loss has to be acknowledged before we can move forward.

Counselling can hold your hand all the way through. You don’t have to do this alone.

Bereavement counselling helps clients find a place for their loss so that life can go forward until acceptance. With acceptance comes new hope. It is important to stress that there is a balance to be sought between starting again and keeping the person who was so loved alive in the memory in good comforting, positive ways. Enjoy the memories, don’t deny them. This will take time. Accepting the loss, experiencing the pain, trying to adjust to life without a loved one takes all your energy. This energy can slowly be put in a new place I.e. moving on.
